Morgan will not be Returned to the Ocean We’re extremely sad and disappointed to learn that a Dutch female killer whale, named Morgan, will not be returning to the ocean as promised. Morgan is a young orca who was found sick and malnourished in June 2010 in the Wadden Sea off the Dutch coast. She was rescued and taken to the Dolfinarium in Harderwijk for rehabilitation. The aquarium had initially posted statements that Morgan would of been rehabilitated back into the ocean. However, months have passed, and with the veterinary expertise of $eaworld, the aquarium has now decided that releasing Morgan back into the ocean is not a feasible solution. Really? What kind of life does captivity reserve for Morgan? First of all, studies have shown that orcas are extremely social animals with complex family structures. Introducing Morgan to the Seaworld “family” would certainly stir trouble among tank mates. There are well documented cases of killer whales fighting in the tanks and Seaworld having to relocate them due to it. Most of the orcas at Seaworld belong to the Southern Resident off the coast of Washington state. Morgan is from the Netherlands. Moreover, captivity for Morgan would mean Seaworld would have access to a new genetic DNA for their breeding program. Many of the killer whales at Seaworld are inbred. We can’t even begin to phantom a Tilikum and Morgan offspring. In the end, this decision is about money. These aquariums need Morgan to continue being in business. Young Morgan is already a cash cow for the dolphinarium. Seaworld needs Morgan and is willing to skew the truth and say that they cannot locate her family. This is corporate greed and Morgan does not deserve a life in captivity. Source: hope4dolphins.com/?p=778#more-778
